Jello: Dynamic Spectrum Sharing in Digital Homes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Wireless devices are being increasingly deployed in digital homes to deliver demanding applications such as highquality streaming media. To avoid costly interference, they can use frequency-agile hardware to detect and utilize unoccupied wireless spectrum ranges. The challenge is how to manage spectrum among a variety of heterogeneous consumer devices efficiently without expensive control hardware or disrupting ongoing transmissions. We develop Jello, a distributed dynamic spectrum access system based on noncontiguous OFDMA to provide robust, high-bandwidth communication for consumer wireless devices. We implement a Jello prototype on a 7-node GNU Radio testbed. In this Jello demo, we will run three parallel transmissions with timevarying loads. We show that Jello can significantly increase spectrum utilization while reducing media disruption.

Supporting Demanding Wireless Applications with Frequency-agile Radios
With the advent of new FCC policies on spectrum allocation for next generation wireless devices, we have a rare opportunity to redesign spectrum access protocols to support demanding, latency-sensitive applications such as high-def media streaming in home networks. Given their low tolerance for traffic delays and disruptions, these applications are ill-suited for traditional, contention-based C...

The swift expansion in the wireless technology has shaped the spectrum bandwidth scarce. This lack of spectra has pushed the spectrum management authorities to devise new ways for the efficient utilization of the existing spectrum. According to Federal Communication Commission (FCC) more than 70% of the available spectrum is not utilized optimally. Due to the shortage of available frequencies t...

This paper presents a new approach for dynamic spectrum management for heterogeneous wireless devices. Local congestion degrades the reliability of wireless applications in the License Exempt bands. This leads to the research questions: (1) how to realize equal spectrum sharing between dissimilar systems, and (2) how to improve the collective spectrum efficiency. A solution is in dynamic distri...

What is spectrum sharing ? The traditional way of handling spectrum for cellular wireless wide area networks is illustrated in Figure 1-a, where two operators own certain parts of the spectrum which is again subdivided into three smaller frequency bands each assigned to one Radio Access Technology (RAT). A trend of more flexible use of spectrum is supported by novel developments in radio techno...

The vision behind software radio (SR) is to realize the communication specific signal processing of a radio as far as possible on programmable hardware. An ideal SR samples the received signal directly at the antenna, and its hardware consists of a general purpose processor that is connected with analog-to-digital and with digital-to-analog converters. A radio that uses an analog radio frontend...
